Smartscape Shines Brightly at International DALI Awards
Smartscape have received a Highly Commended at the recent International DALI awards for our Thomas Dixon Project (Qld Ballet).
In a completely stacked category (Architectural & Entertainment) “Judges were impressed with the integration of the DALI system, both with the DMX system in the main performance theatre, and also with the building management system.”
About the project
The Thomas Dixon Centre is truly a unique project. The starting point utilised the original 1906 building shell (originally a shoe factory) which was to be fully restored to keep its heritage status and then combined with a significant new build next to it, with both buildings linked together with a common promenade, truly combining the old and the new.
The building is home to the Queensland Ballet and has a large range of spaces for different applications, from general office areas, extensive dance studios, wardrobe workshops, bar and entertaining areas, underground carparking, wellness and treatment facilities and a full performance theatre.
The client needed a single system that would be able to mange the large range of area types while providing maximum energy efficiency and user comfort to help achieve a WELL building rating.
The system also had to be easy to install, easy to use, reliable and provide flexibility to change lighting in each area to suit day to day needs and would need to seamlessly integrate to the buildings BMS system and speciality lighting system in the Theatre for a complete integrated solution.
Smartscape Connected Lighting Systems were initially engaged by xBURO, the Electrical Engineer to come up with a solution that would meet all these requirements.
A Zencontrol DALI-2 system was chosen as it best met all these requirements and the system now controls nearly 3 thousand DALI devices, including all general lighting, emergency lighting, all sensors, switches and control panels.
The system has full integration with the buildings BMS as well as the complete integration and control over the Smartscape supplied Pharos DMX system in the performance centre.
The cloud based headend provides control and monitoring of every device in the system, including full management of the emergency lighting where tests are simply scheduled an monitored to ensure code compliance.
The building has been designed and built to achieve the highest rating under the Wells Building Standard, which has resulted in an amazing space that focuses on the well-being of its occupants.
Quote from Engineer:
Ellis Wilson, xBURO, Project Electrical Engineer
“One of the critical factors when designing the lighting and lighting controls for QLD Ballet was flexibility. The system needed to be able to manage the current set up and installation but also have flexibility in depth to accommodate future changes as the Ballet grows and expands and their needs change.
The speed and ease of installation, commissioning, fine tuning and of course day-two changes made it a very costs effective solution.
Smartscape’s Zencontrol System provided the obvious solution. It has all the functionality needed plus very easy user functionality.
Set up was fast with fine tuning for all spaces and systems even easier.
The Project will be put forward to be certified by WELL to Platinum level and as such the controls play a key part in managing and thus ensuring compliance with the very stringent WELL requirements.
xBURO worked closely throughout the design and installation of the project with Smartscape to deliver a future proofed fully integrated and configurable lighting control solution.”
